Background/Description

The Brief Religious Coping Scale (BRCOPE) was designed to measure positive and negative religious coping strategies in individuals facing stressful life events. The Urdu version, translated by Shakira Huma Siddiqui, focuses on assessing these coping strategies among chronically ill patients in Pakistan. This adaptation is crucial for understanding how religious coping mechanisms function in non-Western, Muslim-majority contexts.

The Urdu translated version of the Brief religious coping scale (RCOPE) originally developed by Pargament et al. (1998), consists of two patterns of religious coping, namely positive religious coping and negative religious coping, measured through 14 items. The present study used seven items of positive religious coping to assess positive religious coping strategies among chronically ill patients. The present study measured positive religious coping in terms of scores of respondents on 7-items of Positive Religious Coping.

Sample item: sought God’s love and care, or focused on religion to stop worrying about my problems. Positive Religious Coping Scale was rated on a 4-point continuum ranging from 1(Not at all) to 4 (A great deal) reflecting the degree to which patients made use of various positive religious coping methods to deal with their illness. High scores on the scale reflected a high level of positive religious coping and vice versa.

Administration, Scoring and Interpretation

The BRCOPE Urdu version consists of 7 items focusing on positive religious coping strategies. Respondents rate each item on a 4-point Likert scale from 1 (not at all) to 4 (a great deal), indicating the extent to which they use specific religious coping methods. Higher scores indicate greater use of positive religious coping.

Reliability and Validity

The Urdu version of BRCOPE has shown good psychometric properties in terms of reliability and validity. It effectively measures the intended constructs and provides reliable data on religious coping strategies among Pakistani patients. The validation process involved rigorous testing to ensure cultural relevance and accuracy.
