Background/Description

Psychological well-being was measured by two subscales of Anxiety Stress Questionnaire (House & Rizzo, 1972). The two subscales of somatic tension general fatigue were used to measure the possible outcomes in terms of feeling or physical symptoms growing out of stress at work. The Urdu version adapted and validated by Khan (2008) consisted of 10-items ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). Scores for all items were summed and could range from 10 to 50, with high scores indicating high level of well-being. Eight items are reverse scored. The alpha reliability coefficient for the present sample is .51.

Administration, Scoring and Interpretation

  • Format: Self-report questionnaire in Urdu.
  • Number of Items: 10 items.
  • Response Options: 5-point Likert scale ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree).
  • Time Required: Approximately 5 minutes to complete.
  • Population: Urdu-speaking adults; validated among Pakistani workers.
  • Scoring Procedure:
    • Sum the responses for all 10 items to yield a total score (range 10–50).
    • Reverse Scoring: Eight of the ten items are reverse scored (reverse the points before summing).
  • Interpretation:
    • Higher scores indicate higher levels of psychological well-being.
    • Lower scores reflect greater somatic tension and fatigue, i.e., poorer well-being.

Reliability and Validity

  • Internal Consistency: Alpha reliability coefficient reported as .51 in the present sample (Khan, 2008).
  • Content Validity: Derived from established subscales (ASQ) ensuring coverage of stress-related somatic and fatigue indicators.
  • Cultural Validity: Urdu translation and adaptation procedures were carried out to ensure linguistic and cultural appropriateness for Pakistani populations.
