Background/Description
The Child Adolescent Bullying Scale (CABS) is a psychometric tool developed to assess bullying experiences among children and adolescents. Designed to measure both bullying victimization and perpetration, CABS provides a comprehensive understanding of the frequency, type, and impact of bullying behaviors in school and social environments.
Key Features:
- Assesses verbal, physical, relational, and cyberbullying.
- Measures both bullying experiences and perpetration tendencies.
- Suitable for school-based assessments and clinical research.
- Helps in intervention planning and policy development for bullying prevention.
This tool is particularly useful for school psychologists, counselors, researchers, and educators in identifying at-risk youth and developing targeted anti-bullying programs.
The CABS is a newly developed 22-item instrument designed to identify youths at risk for bullying exposure. Items were generated through focus groups with diverse groups of youths and bullying content experts including school personnel and health care providers as well as through review of the scientific literature.
CABS items were specifically developed to reflect the components of the current definition of bullying developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, and the US Department of Education, 2016 (Gladden, Vivolo-Kantor, Hamburger, & Lumpkin, 2014). An international panel comprised of content and methodological experts established the content validity of the CABS. Details of the processes used to develop this scale are reported elsewhere (DiFazio, Strout, Vessey & Lulloff, in review, 2017; Vessey, DiFazio, & Strout, 2017).
The version of the CABS measure tested here is comprised of 20 items pertaining to bullying exposure. In addition there is one item specific to the frequency of bullying exposure and one item regarding the respondent’s perception of a power differential between themselves and the perpetrator. These two items were not included in the computation of the CABS scale score measure.
The item response categories include strongly agree, agree, neither agree nor disagree, disagree, and strongly disagree, with each response option coded numerically from 1 to 5, where one corresponds to strongly disagree and five corresponds to strongly agree. CABS scale scores are computed by summing numeric scores for each item. The summed CABS scores can range from 20 to 100. A high score on the CABS represents a high level of bullying exposure.
Administration, Scoring and Interpretation
- Target Population: Children and adolescents aged 8 to 18 years.
- Format: Self-report questionnaire using a Likert scale.
- Time Required: Approximately 10-15 minutes to complete.
- Scoring System:
- Higher scores indicate higher exposure to bullying or involvement as a bully.
- Interpretation helps in designing individual or group interventions.
- Application Areas: Used in schools, research studies, mental health clinics, and educational policy evaluations.
Reliability and Validity
Reliability: Demonstrates high internal consistency across different forms of bullying.
Validity: Strong correlation with other established bullying scales, indicating good construct validity.
