The Homophily Scale was developed to measure perceived similarity (or homophily) between individuals in interpersonal communication. Homophily refers to the tendency of people to associate with others who are similar to them in beliefs, values, attitudes, or characteristics. It is an important concept in understanding communication dynamics, as higher levels of homophily often lead to more effective and comfortable communication.

The scale was first introduced by McCroskey, Richmond, and Daly (1975) to study how perceived similarity between communicators affects relationships and communication effectiveness. It has been widely used in communication research, particularly in studies involving social networks, organizational communication, and interpersonal relationships.

In both an initial investigation and in four subsequent studies employing samples from diverse populations, four dimensions of response were observed for the Homophily Scale. These dimensions were labeled Attitude, Morality, Appearance, and Background. Additional results indicated that opinion leaders are perceived as more homologous than non-opinion leaders on the dimensions of Attitude, Morality, and Background. The scale is suggested for consideration by researchers concerned with homophily or interpersonal similarity in human communication.

  • Format: The Homophily Scale consists of 12 items designed to assess perceived similarities across various dimensions, such as attitudes, values, and background. Respondents indicate how similar they perceive themselves to be to another person, using a Likert scale ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree).
  • Respondents: The scale is suitable for use with adults in both research and practical settings. It can be administered to individuals in various relational contexts, such as colleagues, friends, or acquaintances, to assess perceived similarities.
  • Scoring: The items are scored on a Likert scale, and the total score is obtained by summing the individual item responses. Higher scores indicate a greater perceived similarity between the respondent and the other individual.

Reliability and Validity

This is a useful measure, but the alpha reliability has not been optimal. New measures are now being tested. There are three dimensions of homophily-attitude, background, and demographic. Demographic homophily can best be measured by observation of the similarity between people’s backgrounds. Perceptions of demographic similarity have not proven to be stable. For the other two dimensions, these scales are acceptable, but alpha reliabilities on these measures, particularly on the background dimension, have often fallen below .70. Initial estimates for the new Likert type scales so far have consistently been above .80.
